Nature at the Heart of Learning: Thomas Hall School Makes Forest School a Weekly Adventure

Thomas Hall Students Go Wild for Weekly Forest School Sessions
At Thomas Hall School, part of the Reach South Academy Trust, we are thrilled to share that starting this term, our students will be taking part in weekly forest school sessions.
After hearing from our students and their families about how much they value the forest school experience, our Headteacher, Phil Arnold, was eager to expand the provision. We believe in offering rich, hands-on learning opportunities that spark curiosity, creativity, and a deep respect for the natural world.
Our forest school runs from Reception through to Year 11, evolving with our students as they grow. These outdoor sessions help them build confidence, independence, and teamwork. Whether they’re identifying plants, building shelters, cooking over a campfire, or creating art from natural materials, our children gain practical skills while deepening their connection to nature.
But our forest school is more than just an outdoor classroom—it’s a philosophy that nurtures the whole child. We support wellbeing, resilience, and environmental awareness through seasonal themes and real-world exploration. Our curriculum encourages students to lead, problem-solve, and care for their surroundings. It’s an approach that not only enhances academic growth but also instils a lifelong love of the outdoors and a sense of responsibility for our planet.
Situated on a beautiful six-and-a-half-acre site on the outskirts of Exeter, we draw on our natural surroundings to promote a curriculum with a strong emphasis on environmental science, nature, and the arts. We encourage our students to engage with today’s climate challenges and foster a culture of sustainability.
We’re also excited to invite families to our Stay & Play Open Day on Wednesday 22nd October, from 3:45pm to 4:30pm, for those considering joining our Reception year in September 2026. This event is a wonderful opportunity for parents and children to experience first-hand what makes Thomas Hall School such a special place to learn and grow.
Visitors will be able to explore our facilities, meet our dedicated Early Years team, and ask any questions about our nurturing and engaging approach to early education. You can book a place here.
As our Headteacher Phil Arnold says:
“At Thomas Hall, we believe that some of the most powerful learning happens beyond the classroom walls. Expanding our forest school provision gives every student the chance to connect with nature, build confidence, and develop vital life skills. It’s wonderful to see the joy, teamwork, and creativity that come from learning in the great outdoors.”
